WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU ARRIVE:

  • Thank you for choosing to visit our museum for your trip.  Below are some things to know before you come and some tips for when you arrive.  You can also access some pre- and post-visit resources for use in your classroom.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Arriving on time is extremely important. Schedules are confirmed before your arrival and will be maintained as best as possible. We try to be flexible, but not at the interference of other scheduled groups.  Upon arrival, please have the person in charge come inside the museum to pay the admission fee and receive your schedule. Unload your buses and have the students put all lunches as instructed.

  • The guided exhibit tour is approximately 45 minutes to an hour. The tour may be shortened upon request or other variables. The guides do their best to give informative tours, but please help them out by maintaining order within your group.

  • Rock collecting and viewing your rocks are self-guided activities, making them the hands-on part of your visit. We will provide each student with a bag to fill.

THINGS TO KNOW:

  • A sufficient number of adults should be provided to properly supervise all minors in your charge at all times. You are responsible for their well-being and maintaining proper behavior and order. The museum staff is not responsible for maintaining order and has the right to stop any activity at their discretion.

  • Proper attire and footwear are a must! You will be walking on rocks, up and down a steep hill, and on uneven surfaces.  Rain gear is optional; collecting is done rain or shine.

  • Bring a bag lunch. We do not offer any food service facilities. There are two eating areas with ample space. The outside pavilion seats several hundred.

  • Digging tools are NOT  provided or permissible for minors. There are all different-sized pieces to be found, and tools are not necessary.

  • Collecting bags: The museum will provide collecting bags for each of your “rock hounds” to use to collect.  They may keep all the rocks they find that will fit in the bag.  Anything over that is weighed and priced per pound. No backpacks are permitted in the collecting area.

  • Viewing of rocks: The ID shed, located in the back portion of the museum property, contains shortwave mineral lamps to view the rocks that fluoresce. Make sure you save time from your collecting for your group to do this. It’s great for them to see what they have found.

  • Observe signs: It is very important that your group follows all directions and signs. Do not allow climbing on slopes surrounding the collecting area.

  • Souvenirs: The museum has an awesome gift shop. We have items that range from $1.00 and up. This can easily fit into your schedule and is a good experience for the children.

If you have any further questions or any special requests, please feel free to contact us.  Also, ask us about our early booking bonus for your next trip.

We look forward to seeing you!
